Our 2024 Summer Regional Art Show will

open June 24th - July 20th at Franklin Square Gallery.

Cash Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for 2D and 3D.

Memorial, Merit and Honorable Mention Awards will be awarded!

A reception will be held Friday, July 12, 2024, from 5 to 7 pm, at Franklin Square Gallery

Two Day Workshop on Mixed Media Drawing with
Artist Sid Godwin

 June 24th and 25th  from 10am to 3pm

 

Mixed Media Drawing

The workshop will focus on the use of traditional and non-traditional

drawing techniques using a combination of various art materials.

There will be an introduction on the development of

drawing approaches up to the present time.

Drawing techniques will be introduced followed by an exercise applying the technique with a critique of the results. Techniques will include edge emphasis, frame reference, Light dark pattern, additive and subtractive drawing, and compositional strategies.

 

Materials Checklist

  • * Drawing pad, 15”x20” or 18”x24”, a sturdy drawing paper e.g. bristol, strathmore.

  • *Soft graphite pencils, 2b, 3b,4b.

  • *Soft and hard pastels ( Nupastels). Make sure your colors include the

  • primary colors, red, yellow, and blue.

  • *Color pencils, assortment.

  • *2 gum erasers.

  • *1-2 small soft cloth ( anything like t-shirt material), 12” to 14” square.

  • *Hard edge tool e.g. scissors, mat knife, exacto knife.

  • *Artist's workable fixative.

  • *Subject matter, an assortment of 3-4 objects, can be a combination of fruit, a cup, a small bowl etc.

Franklin Square Gallery

Sidney K. Godwin is a former professor of art and Director of the Center for the Visual Arts in Lincroft, New Jersey. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and a Master of Art from Rutgers University. Since retiring he lives in Southport, North Carolina and devotes his time to his painting.
Mr. Godwin has exhibited professionally since 1970. His artwork is in corporate, institutional, and private collections both nationally and in Europe. His artwork can be found in the Pfizer Corporation art collection, Bank of Virginia,

The Mariners Museum, Newport News, Virginia,
Rutgers University, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

New Lecture Series by
Kirah Van Sickle!

Franklin Square Gallery announces a new art lecture series by the well-known artist and educator Kirah Van Sickle. Held at Franklin Square Gallery, the 5-part series covers topics of interest to artists and those who love art.

Each lecture begins at 3:00 p.m. and the attendance fee is $15.00 ($75.00 for the entire series.) Tickets may be purchased at the Gallery, or through the link below.
The topics for the lectures are as follows:

  • April 17: Art that Shaped America

  • May 1 – Joaquin Sorolla: Spain’s Monet

  • June 12 – Post Impressionism: The Genesis of Expressionism

  • June 26 – The Ways of Water: Watercolor Masters

  • July 17 – Dada, Dreams and Dali

Kirah Van Sickle is an artist and adventurer at heart. Her early years set a foundation for travel, exploration and visual storytelling. She received her undergraduate degree from Duke University, Master of Science in Medical Illustration from the Medical College of Georgia, and Master of Fine Arts in Painting from the Academy of Art University, in San Francisco. She managed her creative consulting company, Animania, for 18 years, before transitioning to higher education. She is an adjunct instructor at the Cameron Art Museum, Cape Fear Community College and Johnston Community College.
